Mexican GP: Rosberg perfect does not give in to Hamilton
Mercedes double, Bottas third. Black day for Ferrari
Nico Rosberg makes no mistakes this time and masterfully manages the 71 laps of the Mexican Grand Prix, keeping teammate Lewis Hamilton behind him, constantly in his mirrors. Third time for Vallteri Bottas' Williams, which snatched the bronze from Kvyat's Red Bull in the final stages, thus returning to the podium for the second time this season.
Sunday to forget instead for Ferrari, with Raikkonen knocked out following an Austin-style contact with his Williams compatriot, and Vettel hitting the wall with twenty laps to go, after an uphill race. Retirement (announced, given that McLaren was aware of the unresolved problems with the power unit) also for Alonso and Nasr's Sauber. Kvyat, Ricciardo, Massa, Hulkenberg, Perez, Verstappen and Grosjean complete the top ten.
With the Mexican victory, Rosberg returns to second place in the drivers' championship, overtaking Vettel by 21 points.
News – Once the reconnaissance lap is complete, everything is ready: soft compound for the entire grid - new for Sainz, Grosjean, Maldonado, Nasr and the Manor - except Alonso, Raikkonen and Button who ride the mediums. When the light turns green, Rosberg remains in front and manages to defend himself from Hamilton's attack. Behind Kvyat he takes third place over Vettel: in an attempt to defend himself from Ricciardo's Red Bull, the German loses a tire and is forced to immediately return to the pits - switching to medium. Alonso retired after just a couple of laps due to a loss of power. On lap three Rosberg leads the group ahead of Hamilton, Kvyat, Ricciardo, Bottas, Verstappen, Massa, Perez, Hulkenberg and Sainz. Sainz climbs to ninth place. On lap 9 Bottas returns to the pits and switches to medium due to apparent graining problems.
After the first 14 laps less than half the grid has already stopped, with Massa the only one in the top ten. Raikkonen meanwhile rose to eighth place.
Lap 16 Rosberg, Hamilton, Kvyat, Ricciardo, Verstappen, Perez, Kimi, Bottas, Massa, Hulkenberg, Button and Vettel who has just passed Sainz.
Vettel then goes to attack the McLaren but after overtaking, he ends up spinning and thus loses 4 positions in one fell swoop. On lap 20 Perez stops in the pits and returns eleventh behind Sainz.
Lap 22 Kvyat pits and rejoins fifth ahead of Kimi and Bottas. Williams attacks Ferrari: the right rear of the Ferrari ends up above the front left of Bottas. Raikkonen loses the suspension and is thus restricted to retirement.
On lap 26 Ricciardo also stops and immediately after it is Rosberg's turn. On lap 29 it was Hamilton's turn who returned to second place.
On lap 30 all the riders are on medium tyres, only Button has yet to stop. On lap 32 the Englishman also returns and mounts the soft tires. So after the first stop: Rosberg, Hamilton, Kvyat, Bottas, Massa, Vettel, Verstappen, Ricciardo, Hulkenberg and Sainz.
Sainz's mistake with Perez who takes advantage of it and climbs ninth to the delight of the home crowd. Three laps later Vettel stops again and puts the mediums on again. Upon returning, the Ferrari is lapped by Rosberg. The gap between the two leading Mercedes is almost 3 seconds, while Kvyat is third at over 20 seconds. Followed by Bottas, Massa, Ricciardo, Hulkenberg, Verstappen, Perez and Sainz.
On lap 42 Vettel is also forced to let Hamilton pass. Lap 45 second pit stop for Sainz who mounts the soft tires and returns 13th behind Vettel.
Lap 47 Pit stop for Rosberg and medium tyres. Hamilton is also recalled but the world champion does not agree on the strategy and does not return immediately. “Security reasons” they tell him and the British is forced to obey. On lap 50 Rosberg is still in the lead ahead of Hamilton, Kvyat, Bottas, Massa, Ricciardo, Hulkenberg, Verstappen, Perez and Grosjean.
On lap 52 Ricciardo steals fifth place from Massa and immediately afterwards Vettel ends up on the wall. Retirement also for the second Ferrari and safety car on track. Kvyat, Ricciardo, Massa and Hulkenberg return to the pits. The small group reunites with Rosberg followed by Hamilton, Kvyat, Bottas, Ricciardo, Massa, Hulkenberg, Perez, Verstappen, Grosjean.
On lap 58 we start again, with Hamilton immediately trying to attack Nico but the German resists. Bottas instead steals third place from Kvyat. Meanwhile, Nasr's Sauber withdraws due to brake problems. The final battles saw Bottas intent on defending himself from Kvyat, and Massa - sixth - trying to catch up to Ricciardo. Further behind, Verstappen must protect his position from the Lotus pair, fighting for the final places in the top ten. Hamilton makes a mistake during the final laps and loses some ground Rosberg which thus goes on to win the Mexican Grand Prix in front of his teammate and others Bottas.
