German GP: Vettel takes pole from Alonso

Sebastian Vettel obtained pole position in qualifying for the German Formula 1 Grand Prix. In Hockenheim, the German denied Fernando Alonso pole by just 2 thousandths in his home race. Felipe Massa confirms the Red Bull's progress with third position on the grid while Mark Webber is fourth with the second Red Bull and ahead of the two McLarens. Michael Schumacher failed to reach Q3 in front of his home crowd.

Alonso looked like the favorite for pole after the fastest times in Q1 and Q2 and provisional pole in Q3, although Vettel was just 34 thousandths behind.

On the last run Vettel managed to improve further, dropping to 1.13.791, overtaking Ferrari. Alonso looked capable of beating him again but lost the small margin in the final stretch.

Massa is third, half a second behind Webber, who is fourth despite a mistake at the last corner. Jenson Button is unusually ahead of Lewis Hamilton on the third row, with the two McLarens ahead of Robert Kubica's Renault.

Williams brought both cars into Q3: Barrichello was eighth, Nico Hulkenberg tenth, between them Nico Rosberg's Mercedes.

Schumacher out in Q2 at the wheel of a Mercedes in difficulty on his home circuit.

Difficult session for Force India: Sutil will be penalized by five positions on the grid for replacing the gearbox but would still have started only 14th while Liuzzi caused a seven-minute interruption when he spun at the last corner in Q1 and crashed into the pit wall. The Italian, uninjured, will start 22nd.
