F1 GP Germany, Free Practice 2: Hamilton precedes Rosberg and Ricciardo

Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time in the second free practice session of the German GP on Friday. In Hockenheim the Mercedes Englishman lapped in 1.18.341 ahead of his Mercedes teammate, Nico Rosberg, and Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull. Ferrari in fourth position with Kimi Raikkonen and ninth with Fernando Alonso. In the long runs Mercedes and Red Bull showed a similar pace.

At the green light only Ericsson hurried onto the track, followed shortly after by Kobayashi and Gutierrez. Ericsson set a first time of 1.25.361 but soon after the team asked him to turn off the engine due to an oil pressure problem.

Gutierrez then briefly took the lead with 1.23.712, overtaken first by Magnussen and then by Raikkonen (1.20.263). Rosberg then took the lead with 1.19.729 and later with 1.19.424 while Hamilton, Ricciardo, Vettel, Massa and Raikkonen entered behind him. Alonso was instead forced to return to the garage after the installation lap due to a telemetry problem.

The Spaniard managed to complete his run after around 30 minutes, moving up to fifth position. Shortly afterwards Hulkenberg set the second fastest time while Kobayashi's Caterham also ended up KO with the start of a fire put out by the stewards with fire extinguishers. The teams then moved on to evaluate performance on the supersoft tyres. Hamilton took the lead with 1.18.341, trailing Rosberg by 24 thousandths and Ricciardo by a tenth, while Raikkonen moved into fourth position, half a second behind the Englishman.

Alonso's lap was not exciting, only ninth in the qualifying simulation. Half an hour from the end the teams then moved on to evaluate the race pace. Mercedes and Red Bull showed a very similar race pace in the long runs while Williams seemed to be the third force. In Ferrari Raikkonen seemed in better shape than Alonso. Hamilton therefore finished with the best time ahead of Rosberg, Ricciardo, Raikkonen, Magnussen, Massa, Button, Vettel, Alonso and Bottas.
