In front of his audience Fernando Alonso achieved the best time in the second free practice session of the European Grand Prix. In Valencia the Renault Spaniard lapped in 1.39.404 ahead of the two Brawn GPs Di Button and Barrichello.

Alonso was the first to take the lead and with his 1.41.661 he remained in command for the first 30 minutes. The two Williams cars of Nakajima and Rosberg took the lead momentarily and then it was Button's turn with a 1.31.534.

The riders then switched to the super-softs and Rosberg dropped to 1.41.394 shortly after the halfway point of the session. But almost immediately Alonso, Trulli, Barrichello and Button did better.

Alonso then took the lead again ahead of Barrichello, Button, Trulli, Raikkonen and Kovalainen.

The Spaniard was also involved in a collision with Nick Heidfeld on the last corner. Both were forced to return to the pits. Nakajima, Rosberg and Barrichello further improved their times, dropping to 1.40.209 with 10 minutes to go.

Alonso then returned to the track with a new front wing and a new set of super-soft tires and set the best time of the weekend in 1.39.404, two minutes from the end. The Spaniard was improving on the following lap but ended up spinning at turn 17.

Button then finished second ahead of his teammate, confirming the impression that Brawn have a great package this weekend. Rosberg is fourth ahead of Nakajima and Sutil who confirmed his speed in the afternoon too. Fisichella's Force India is also in the top 10, eighth.

Among them Robert Kubica's BMW. Vettel and Kovalainen complete the top ten. Raikkonen was only 11th with Ferrari ahead of Trulli and the Renault of debutant Romain Grosjean. Luca Badoer finished the day 18th, 2.6 seconds from the top. The Italian was fined 2.200 Euros for speeding in the pit lane.

Lewis Hamilton finished last after damaging his car in a spin early in the session.
