British GP – Massa: “This track could suit our car”

On the eve of the British Grand Prix there was talk about how this fast and smooth track could be suitable for the F138. And Massa, based on what was said this afternoon in the meeting with the press in the Scuderia Ferrari hospitality area, seems to agree in this regard.

“If we look at Barcelona and China, we were competitive there. And this track is similar in terms of fast corners and the abrasiveness of the asphalt, which determines the choice of tyres,” began Felipe. “I therefore think that this track can adapt to our car. But, as usual on Thursdays, we have to wait and see. Looking at the points, it is important to have a good race. From now until the end of the year it is very important to do this. The expectation is to have a great weekend."

The Brazilian driver didn't have much luck in this round of the World Championship, never managing to get on the podium. A situation which, however, did not affect his enthusiasm for the English circuit. “I've finished fourth twice, but this is a track where I really enjoy racing. In general I prefer these old types of track, along with Spa and Suzuka,” said the Brazilian driver. “I'm very optimistic about the possibility of being able to have a good race and aim for my first podium on this track.”

It's no secret that one thing that would improve Felipe and Fernando's chances on race day would be to start from the top positions on the grid. And the Brazilian driver admitted the need to work on this aspect. “I think everything is still possible as far as the Championship is concerned, because in the end the races count more than qualifying. But qualifying is still very important to be able to have a good race, starting at the front and finishing at the front. We are working very hard to make the car competitive in qualifying, without losing the qualities we have in the race. It's not easy to find the complete package in a single-seater."

The announcement of Mark Webber's retirement from Formula 1 at the end of this season was the news of the day. And Felipe commented on the Australian driver's decision like this. “A rider should do what he feels like doing and I fully respect his decision. Mark feels it's time to do something a little different. I always think that in our profession there are two lives: the first in Formula 1, after which he starts a new life with a new career. Mark chose his time and we will all have to face that situation at some point." The response naturally led to a question about his future and when a decision might be made for 2014. “I don't think it will take too long, maybe when the first part of this season is completed,” replied the Ferrari driver. “I think I have a good chance of staying here. We have to work and achieve good results, because in the end it is your results in the race that count the most. I am very confident about the races that await us between now and the end of the season. I don't know what I'll do when I stop Formula 1, but I'll want to race. I'm not sure about the championship that includes Le Mans, because different types of racing cars take to the track, where there could be 20-second lap differences. Maybe I would prefer shorter races, where you can fight from start to finish, like the DTM perhaps. But I have no idea when I'll decide to stop. I therefore hope to have a few more years in Formula 1 to fight for victories and championships."
