Korean GP, Alonso wins and takes the lead in the world championship

Fernando Alonso won the Formula 1 Korean GP with Ferrari, taking the lead in the drivers' championship, taking advantage of Red Bull's bad day which saw the retirement of Mark Webber, who went off the track in the rain, and Sebastian Vettel, who was betrayed by his engine a few laps from the end when he was in the lead. Second place for Lewis Hamilton (McLaren Mercedes), in a race conditioned by numerous safety cars. Also on the podium was the other Ferrari driver Felipe Massa, third, ahead of Michael Schumacher (Mercedes GP), Robert Kubica (Renault), Tonio Liuzzi (Force India). Barrichello's Williams, Kobayashi and Heidfeld's Saubers and Alguersuari's Toro Rosso complete the top 10.

The race started in the pouring rain under the safety car but after 3 laps the race direction decided to display the red flag. The race restarted at 16.05pm local time, still under the safety car with extreme wet tyres.

There were several errors in these phases with the asphalt still very wet. Among others, Yamamoto and Schumacher ended up off the track while di Grassi immediately returned to the pits for a tire change. The Brazilian then pitted again for another tire change on lap 14 to have new tires for the restart.

Meanwhile, Hamilton asked his team several times via radio to urge the race direction to speed up the restart while Webber, of the opposite opinion, described conditions that were still prohibitive.

The race restarted on lap 18. Vettel maintained the lead ahead of Webber and Alonso while Rosberg immediately attacked Hamilton and overtook him in fourth place. Schumacher also had an excellent start as he overtook Kubica in seventh place and immediately became a threat behind Button and Massa.

On lap 19 Webber ended up spinning after putting two wheels on the grass and also hit Rosberg who was oncoming. Both drivers were unharmed and the safety car was back in action once again while Heidfeld, Buemi, Kobayashi and Petrov returned to the pits and some of them took the risk of fitting intermediate tyres.

The race restarted on lap 23. Senna and Trulli came into contact at the back of the pack and the Italian lost his front wing.

On lap 27 Grassi crashed while Schumacher managed to overtake Button in fifth place. Shortly afterwards Trulli also withdrew due to technical problems. Vettel meanwhile has already increased his lead over Alonso to 3 seconds.

On lap 29 Button returned to the pits to fit intermediate tyres, followed by Sutil. The Englishman returned to the track in 11th position while Kovalainen, attacked by Buemi, ended up spinning but managed to continue.

Alonso started to set excellent times, catching up on Vettel. Petrov managed to overtake Hulkenberg in ninth place after the German left the pits on intermediate tyres.

On lap 32 Buemi and Glock came into contact, both ended up out of the race causing the safety car to come out again.

Hamilton, Massa, Schumacher, Kubica, Barrichello, Alguersuari and Liuzzi immediately rushed to the pits to fit intermediate tires and shortly after it was Vettel and Alonso's turn. Some problems in fixing the front right slowed down the Spaniard's stop and upon returning to the track he found himself behind Hamilton in third position while Vettel maintained the lead.

The race restarted on lap 35 with Alonso immediately overtaking Hamilton, who came wide at the first corner.

Sutil at the back forced Button to run wide. The world champion thus dropped to 12th position while Alonso brought his gap to Vettel to 1 seconds.

On lap 40 Petrov crashed, destroying his Renault. However, the Russian pilot escaped unharmed from the impact.

Vettel extended his lead over Alonso to 2 seconds. Thanks to the lapping on lap 6, Alonso managed to get closer.

On lap 46 Vettel's engine crashed with smoke while Alonso took the lead ahead of Hamilton. On lap 47 Sutil attacked Kobayashi and in the wet he hit the Japanese and ended up out of the race.

On lap 52 Button ended up spinning but managed to continue in 12th position. Meanwhile, Liuzzi managed to move up to sixth position behind Schumacher and Kubica, taking advantage of Hulkenberg's problems, finishing ninth behind Barrichello and Kobayashi.

Alonso went on to win ahead of Hamilton to take the lead in the championship. Massa was also on the podium with the other Ferrari.
