GP China, Free Practice 1: Alonso the fastest
Then Rosberg and Ricciardo. Problems for Raikkonen
Ferrari in front in the first free practice of the Formula 1 Chinese GP. Fernando Alonso achieved the best time in 1:39.783, ahead of Nico Rosberg's Mercedes and Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull. Problems for the other Red of Kimi Raikkonen, author of only one installation lap.
chronicle – Even before the green light, Raikkonen, Bianchi (fuel system) and Gutierrez (clutch) suffered technical problems. After the first installation laps and a spin by Maldonado, Massa set the first benchmark time of 1.42.725 after the first 20 minutes. All the drivers suffered from the low temperatures (17 degrees on the track). Shortly afterwards the two McLarens of Button and Magnussen overtook the Brazilian and then it was Rosberg's turn to take the lead first with 1.41.063 and then with 1.40.840, on medium tires while Alonso and Hamilton got in behind him.
After the first half of the session Vergne moved into third position while his teammate Kvyat spun, without consequences, at turn 12. Shortly afterwards Vettel moved into fifth position while Alonso jumped into the lead with 1'39"783 . Ricciardo then entered behind the Spaniard and in front of Rosberg.
Raikkonen completed just one installation lap, then the mechanics resumed work on his car to prepare it for FP2.
Rosberg then closed in on Alonso, moving within 4 tenths of the Spaniard. Behind him Ricciardo, Button, Hulkenberg, Magnussen, Vergne, Hamilton, Vettel and Massa. The Mercedes Englishman did little lap time in the morning due to a small technical problem.
In the last half hour of testing there were no improvements in times, in the second session the teams will test the soft tyre.
