Bahrain GP, Free Practice 1: Massa precedes Alonso
Rosberg, Vettel and Di Resta follow
Felipe Massa set the best time in the first Free Practice session of the 2013 Bahrain Grand Prix. The Brazilian set his best lap in 1:34.487, trailing his teammate, Fernando Alonso, by just 77 thousandths. Behind the Spaniard Rosberg, Vettel and Di Resta. Ninth position for Raikkonen, thirteenth Hamilton.
The weather conditions were optimal. Gutierrez and Chilton were the first drivers to take to the track on hard tires for their installation lap followed by the two Williams and the two McLarens.
Rodolfo Gonzalez, Marussia's reserve driver, replaced Jules Bianchi while Kovalainen took over from Van der Garde for this first session.
The first timed lap belonged to Hulkenberg who improved his time on his second crossing of the finish line, stopping the clock at 1:40.521. Sauber announced via Twitter that they were testing some new aerodynamic parts. The drivers improve their times. Vettel is the first to go under 1:35. Subsequently, Alonso set the best time of 1:34.564 but shortly after was 77 thousandths behind his teammate who took the lead.
Gearbox problems for Gonzalez's Marussia who will have to lead Bianchi in Free Practice 2.
