Williams amazing with Bottas second. Rosberg third
Front row all Williams branded at Red Bull Ring, with Felipe Massa snatching pole position from his teammate Bottas in the last tense minutes of the 2014 Austrian GP Qualifying.
This is how the cards of the World Cup are mixed up with the Mercedes who for the first time since the beginning of the season will not start ahead of the rest of the group. Second row with Nico Rosberg and Fernando Alonso and behind them the Red Bull Ricciardo and Magnussen's McLaren. The young rookie Kvyat did a great job as he will start seventh next to him Raikkonen. Disappointing afternoon instead Hag, only thirteenth. Hamilton he paid dearly for a mistake on the final lap and finished ninth ahead of Hulkenberg, demoted one position for cutting the white line.
News – Q1 – We set off again in search of the perfect lap at Red Bull Ring, to win the best place on the starting grid of the Austrian track.
The first timed lap is Kvyat with his Toro Rosso, protagonist with his teammate since the morning. Alonso doesn't hide, immediately moving into the top positions while Raikonenn takes a little longer to get into gear than the Spaniard. The drivers are using the yellow compounds for this first part of Q1, which are less performing than the Super Softs expected for the weekend. Five minutes from the start here Hamilton who begins to dictate the pace, with the two behind him Williams. More in the shadows for the moment Red Bull, while Toro Rosso confirms the good performance of the morning by placing Kvyat between the two Silver Arrows. The first 18 minutes go away with Hamilton ahead of everyone, fourth place for Magnussen, followed by Perez, Vergne, Button, Raikkonen, Massa and Button. Sutil, Gutierrez, Bianchi, Chilton, Kobayashi and Ericsson return to the pits and conclude the day.
Q2 – Back on track with all the single-seaters fitted with Super Soft tires for this second part of Qualifying. Now it's time to make all the power available to secure a place in Q3 and fight for pole. The two Mercedes they hesitate in the pits. There Williams of Bottas still shows himself to be very fast, taking the lead after a few minutes, but here comes Hamilton who snatches first place from him, in turn immediately ousted by Rosberg. The two hold their own Mercedes on the head, with the Williams behind and Alonso immediately behind. Instead, he risks the other Ferrari which however manages to return to the top ten. Both Red Bull instead they struggle and risk not taking part in Q3... Only Ricciardo he manages to get through by the skin of his teeth, placing ninth. Vettel, Perez, Button, Maldonado, Vergne and Grosjean keep company in the pits.
Q3 – Williams immediately protagonist in the last eleven minutes available to grab pole position. Bottas he achieved a phenomenal lap, 1:08.846. First Alonso and then Rosberg they stand behind him. Massa also arrives and manages to snatch third place from the Ferrari driver. There are a few minutes to go and Lewis Hamilton he sets off in pursuit of pole but one mistake is enough to send him slipping to the bottom of the top ten while the clock is ticking and he takes advantage of it Felipe Massa, who with the best time of 1:08.759 is the poleman of the 2014 Austrian GP!
