Australian GP, Free Practice 2: Mercedes at the top with Hamilton and Rosberg. Alonso third

Best time for Lewis Hamilton in the second free practice session of the Australian F1 GP, the first race of the 2014 season. The Mercedes Englishman finished Friday ahead of everyone after missing the morning session due to a sensor failure. Hamilton lapped in 1.29.625 ahead of his teammate, Nico Rosberg, and Fernando Alonso's Ferrari.

Mercedes also seemed to have the advantage on race pace in the long runs with Ferrari and Red Bull slightly behind. The world champion team seems to be recovering with Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo in fourth and sixth place, separated by Jenson Button's McLaren. Kimi Raikkonen was only seventh with Ferrari, slowed down by a technical problem that caused him to stop at the end of the pitlane while trying to start. The Ferrari driver then returned to the track completing a total of 32 laps, more than his teammate (28).

Eighth time for Bottas' Williams ahead of the other McLaren of Kevin Magnussen. Nico Hulkenberg was tenth with Force India.

The teams achieved their best times on the soft tires and in the second part of the session they dedicated themselves to long runs. Lotus is still in difficulty: Romain Grosjean completed only 12 laps, finishing 18th, with no laps for Pastor Maldonado.
