Australian GP: the Pirelli tires work well, the two stops are possible for Sutil
Despite fears of having to make four or even five pit stops in Melbourne, Adrian Sutil declared after the first free practice on Friday that the tire situation in Astralia is not so disastrous.
The new tire supplier, Pirelli, has attracted much criticism for the degradation seen in testing, but wear was not that heavy during three hours of free practice under overcast skies and low temperatures.
“They need at least one lap to bring them up to temperature, but I did a long run without any problems, because there are few fast corners” declared the Force India driver.
The team strategists arrived in Australia with the idea of making many more stops: “Two stops are possible, we lose some time here in the pitlane. So someone might try to do two,” Sutil said.
Sam Michael from Williams is of the same opinion: “Melbourne doesn't have fast corners like Barcelona or Jerez, so it's easier on the tyres”.
