Gerhard Berger: “The choices of Alonso and Vettel have affected people's recent judgment”

At the end of 2014 Fernando Alonso left Ferrari to embark on his adventure (the second) in McLaren, while Sebastian Vettel said goodbye to Red Bull - with which he had won four consecutive titles - to fulfill his lifelong dream: arriving at the court of the Cavallino.

These choices, with the consequent results achieved during the last season, have changed the opinion of fans on the Spaniard and the German. Gerhard Berger is convinced of this, who explored the issue in depth in an interview given to Car engine and sport.

"Three years ago we all said that Fernando was the best driver around. Today they would hardly affirm the same thought. He had to endure a troubled season at McLaren and was unable to prove his worth. But people forget this and how much good the Spanish have done in the past. At the same time, almost no one would object to the fact that Vettel appears as the first worthy successor to the great Michael Schumacher, who won five consecutive world titles at Ferrari".

On the Vettel-Schumacher comparison, Berger said: "Sebastian is very similar to Michael, he is very methodical and has adapted very well to Maranello. I spent part of my career at Ferrari, but I wasn't able to adapt to the Italian style like Lauda, Schumacher did in the past and Vettel is doing now.".

"If you fit perfectly into the Ferrari environment then you can be sure that your adventure in red will go well. In hindsight, one might say that Alonso was simply the wrong man Ferrari because of his different working style“, concluded the former Austrian driver.
