In a recent interview given in Singapore, Toto Wolff admitted that Valtteri Bottas has not yet been designated as "driver number two". Despite the latest performances below expectations, Wolff underlined how the Finn is in the fight for the world championship and deserves to play his chances until mathematics forces him to step aside. Mercedes, in fact, will give full free rein to Lewis Hamilton when the Englishman has the mathematical certainty of finishing ahead of the former Williams in the championship.
Here are the words of Toto Wolff: “I think it's clear that the chances of success linked to Lewis are higher than those of Valtteri. We will evaluate the situation from race to race, but the difference is starting to be quite clear. In any case, Valtteri is not a number two driver and he won't be as long as he is fighting for the championship. He has to push and not think he's second."
