Formula 1 | Vandoorne attacks: “McLaren is sacrificing my career for Alonso”

Sensational attack by Stoffel Vandoorne at the end of the last Monaco Grand Prix, sixth round of the 2018 Formula One world championship. Interviewed by the Spanish newspaper Equipo, the Belgian talent accused McLaren of explicitly favoring Fernando Alonso, who, during the last race, would have been rewarded with a faster strategy. Vandoorne, we remember, entered five laps after the Spaniard, suffering the undercut on ultra soft tyres. Furthermore, during the stop, the GP2 Champion lost a few seconds in the pits due to the green light not coming on.

Here are the words of Stoffel Vandoorne: “I think we should have stopped five laps earlier. Fernando went out right in front of me on that occasion and the damage was already done since Monaco doesn't allow you to do certain maneuvers. It was a real disappointment. I feel like they are sacrificing my career for Alonso's benefit."

“Strategically - he added - we had to stay in the same window as Sainz. That was our strategy and therefore, in theory, we should have finished behind him. The problem is that during the pit stop the green light didn't come on when restarting and because of this I lost precious seconds. The pace on the super softs wasn't bad here in Monaco, but everyone knows that overtaking here is impossible."
