Formula 1 | Todt: “F1 and Le Mans should share the same engine”

In an interview given to Auto Motor Und Sport, Jean Todt spoke about the projects in the pipeline by the FIA, underlining how the single engine for the two main categories as regards the Federation, Formula One and FIA World Endurance Championship, is a very vivid idea in the mind of the French Manager.

Todt hopes for an alignment between the Circus and Le Mans starting from 2021, so as to have a greater exchange of information. The single engine, in fact, would allow the teams to significantly lower costs, thus managing to put together two projects for a racing season (think of McLaren.ed.).

Here are the words of Jean Todt: “At the moment we have separate rules for each series, but we don't want this to be the case in the future. The requirements for Formula 1 and the FIA WEC are similar as a power unit must cover around 5.000 kilometres, approximately the distance to Le Mans. Having an equal engine concept would be interesting for new manufacturers. Formula One teams could set up a project for Le Mans and vice versa, lowering the team's management and track costs."
