It was a record season for Pirelli and for the entire F1 circus. The arrival of the new "oversized" tires, in fact, increased the mechanical grip of the single-seaters, lowering lap times in both qualifying and the race. The objective will be to continue along this path in 2018, putting together a product that manages to improve the cornering performance obtained during 2017.
Here are the words of Mario Isola, Pirelli Car Racing Manager: “From a record season we have record numbers. Formula 1 introduced revolutionary technical regulations in 2017, which led to the single-seaters becoming the fastest ever. So our goal was to create the most high-performance tires ever, 25% wider than the previous ones to cope with the increase in loads and cornering speeds and which nevertheless allowed the riders to push hard from start to finish. of each stint. We achieved this result with the tests in 2016 carried out with mule single-seaters, not with the race cars which have never seen the new tires before the pre-season tests in Barcelona."
“Throughout this year, the pole position averaged 2,450 seconds faster than in 2016, while the fastest race lap averaged 2,968 seconds slower. Despite the increase in loads of up to 35-40% in the fastest corners, our 2017 tires achieved all the objectives set at the beginning of the season, with an excellent level of reliability and consistency in performance. For 2018 we have developed an even faster tire, the Pink hypersoft, and every compound to increase speeds and spectacle even more" he added.
