Pierre Gasly enchants, McLaren and Vettel do badly

Formula 1 | Dutch GP report cards: spectacular Verstappen and Hamilton

Max Verstappen 10 cum laude As a true champion in the making, he manages the cheering, the noise, the pressure, the expectations, channeling them into a perfect performance. From pole to the race he dominated with coolness and an unapproachable pace, like a true absolute master, a prophet at home in a Zandvoort with an ancient flavour. He takes back the lead in the world championship. Seventh solo of the season, sixteenth of his career, it's overwhelming.

lewis hamilton 10 The heart, tenacity, determination and desire to win, competitive anger and determination to try to overturn the unfortunate prediction. Red Bull is too fast, he gives everything, tries everything, painting trajectories to attack Verstappen. From applause, the world championship is very much alive.

Valtteri Bottas 7 Used as a pawn by the team, his help to Hamilton is rather timid. He almost makes the omelette with the fastest lap, with Lewis "making up for it" in the photo finish. Third place is a good result for him and for the Constructors.

Pierre Gasly 9 Exceptional performance, fourth in qualifying and in the race, perfect in managing the tires and controlling the gap on the Ferrari. Yet another weekend as a top driver for the Frenchman who took the little AlphaTauri by the hand, effectively bringing it to battle with much more renowned teams. Sublime.

Charles Leclerc 7 The lap times show that he tried, pulling like crazy to close on Gasly and take fourth place. But that's the potential of the SF21 and in the end it has to settle for a still honest fifth place.

Fernando Alonso 7,5 Spectacular at the start, relentless hunter as soon as he sees his prey, pushing at breakneck speed in the final phase and managing to overtake his "student" Sainz on the last lap, a double satisfaction. Racing animal, not a new thing.

Carlos Sainz 6 The seventh place finish is not a disaster, and is positive for Ferrari's Constructors' classification, but in the race Carlos is unable to get close to Leclerc's times in either stint, later admitting that he was not comfortable with the SF21. Subpar race, shame about the overtaking suffered by Alonso.

Sergio Perez 6,5 Between traffic and problems he disappoints in qualifying, therefore making no contribution to the Red Bull cause. He rose again in the second half of the race, with nice overtaking moves left and right which allowed him to complete a good comeback, from last to eighth. But he should help Max…

Esteban Ocon 6 Honest GP for the winner of Budapest. He shines more in qualifying than in the race, with a very regular Sunday, not at Alonso's level. Ninth under the checkered flag.

Lando Norris 5,5 Very long stint with medium tires to catch up, weekend on a low note for the "surprise" of the world championship. Just one point for a McLaren in difficulty at Zandvoort.

Daniel Ricciardo 5 Histrionic off the track, dull between the bends. The opposite would be better...

Lance Stroll 5 Try to fight with a rather slow Aston Martin.

Sebastian Vettel 4,5 Blocked by traffic in qualifying and a completely anonymous race, complete with a nostalgic spin, bad.

Antonio Giovinazzi 8 The "number" in qualifying - seventh time - is worth the price of the ticket alone, considering the current potential of an Alfa Romeo faster only than the Haas. Unfortunately he still pays for his bad luck in the race, with a puncture that prevents him from fighting for the points. He was tenth.

Robert Kubica 7 The talent of this fantastic thirty-seven year old is to get into the car, called at the last moment to replace Kimi, and not disfigure himself even a little, as if time had never passed, reminding us every blessed time of everything that could have been and has not been. Exceptional driver.

Nicholas Latifi 6 He hits hard in qualifying, fights in the race, even managing some good overtaking.

George Russel 6,5 He took risks and crashed in qualifying, attempting another masterpiece of his, but was still fighting for points when he had to retire due to gearbox problems.

Mick Schumacher 5 It doesn't shine.

Yuki Tsunoda 4,5 He drives the same car as Gasly, suffice it to say.

Nikita Mazepin 3 He must stop cutting off his teammate with borderline maneuvers, otherwise the result doesn't change, he always comes last.

Zandvoort 10 How much the calendar was missing an old-fashioned track like this. Narrow, winding, rhythmic and spectacular in its difficult curves, with ups and downs and parabolic turns and the blessed gravel on the sides of the asphalt. No airport-style escape routes, if you make a mistake you pay and the pilots have to drive more carefully. Real motoring.
