Formula 1 | Mercedes, great comeback by Hamilton from last place

from Barcelona, Spain

Comeback race for Lewis Hamilton, who achieved a truly unexpected fifth place at Montmelò after contact with Kevin Magnussen on the first lap. Puncture for the seven-time world champion, pit stop which now seems to mark the end of his Sunday, so much so that he would have preferred to retire, but the pace shown throughout the day meant that he managed a spectacular comeback up to fourth place , but then surrendered to Carlos Sainz in the final.

“It was nice to get back on track and I thank the team for the extraordinary work done with this update – Hamilton said. The car went very well in the race, we have a pace that is close to that of the top, and this is fantastic. At first I was unlucky with the puncture, but I didn't give up. It was a lot hotter than expected, and it's pretty tough for everyone with these cars. At the end of the race I had to drive with half throttle to cool the car and the engine and therefore I gave up the position to Sainz. However, considering where I finished, I mean, I was last thirty seconds behind the one in front, I kept pushing and hoped for better. We still have the rebound, but not on the straight, and in the corners it's not as bad as before. It's nice to have a similar pace to that of the leaders."
