Formula 1 | McLaren, Seidl reveals: “McLaren engine? Never considered a hypothesis of this type"

Interviewed by Speed Week magazine, Andreas Seild denied the hypothesis of a McLaren branded engine starting from the 2021 season, underlining how the Woking team has never considered manufacturing its own engine.

Due to the enormous development costs, in fact, the Woking team has chosen to rely on an engine manufacturer already present in the Circus, in this case Mercedes, diverting the budget allocated for 2021 to the chassis and the growth of the structure.

A logical choice, given that McLaren does not have the factory necessary to create a competitive Formula 1 engine, at least for the moment.

“The possibility of a McLaren engine was never taken into consideration,” said Andreas Seidl to the columns of Speed Week. “You would have to invest a lot of money and also you would have to compete for time to catch up with other manufacturers, who already know everything about these power units. It was never a valid argument for us."
