Formula 1 | McLaren, Alonso disappointed: “We don't have pace”

Disastrous qualifying for McLaren on the Le Castellet track. Despite the good conditions at the start of the weekend, in fact, Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne were unable to gain access to Q2, concluding qualifying in sixteenth and eighteenth position. A surprisingly disappointing result that the English team will almost certainly try to make up for in tomorrow's race.

Here are the words of Fernando Alonso: “It was a very disappointing session for us. Our performances have always been so-so on Saturdays, a factor which is confirmed by the fact that since the start of the season our average qualifying position is thirteenth place. I scored points in every race and I'm holding on to that again this time. I hope tomorrow will be one of those Sundays."

“There was nothing wrong with the balance of the car today, our lap time just wasn't fast enough to get through to Q2.”, he added. “In our pre-qualifying meeting we said we thought we would be around 14th or 15th place and so we finished where we expected to finish. We know where we are and, unfortunately, we have to continue to improve..."

Here are the words of Stoffel Vandoorne: “It's very disappointing to see both cars eliminated in Q1. There was nothing particularly wrong with the balance of the car and the feel was ok. We simply lack rhythm. Over the last few months we have worked a lot to understand what was wrong with the car and we must continue on this path, testing and trying to change things. This weekend wasn't good for us and we need to do better. We hope to be able to reverse this trend tomorrow."
