Formula 1 | McLaren, Alonso disappointed: "We bet on the rain"

Disappointing Sunday for McLaren at the Hockenheim track. In fact, despite the eleventh position achieved in qualifying, Fernando Alonso was unable to bring his MCL33 into the points zone, ending his race a few laps from the end due to a yet unspecified mechanical problem. It should be noted that the Spaniard, during the central phase of the race, bet on intermediate tyres, a factor which caused him to lose several positions.

There were also many difficulties for Stoffel Vandoorne, with the Belgian slowed down halfway through the race by a problem with the power unit. Shortly before retiring the car, however, the wall managed to partially fix the problem, allowing the Belgian talent to get to the checkered flag.

Here are the words of Fernando Alonso: “It was a difficult race with truly unpredictable conditions. We bet on intermediate tires and rain, hoping for mixed conditions, but unfortunately it didn't go that way. We went out on track with wet tyres, but unfortunately the conditions required slicks."

“We killed our race as we had to come back. Unfortunately we weren't in the points so we had to try something. It was a bad bet. Furthermore, the engineers encountered some telemetry problems at the end of the race and therefore we chose to withdraw the car", he continued.

Here are Stoffel Vandoorne's impressions: “It was a very strange ride. The first part was terrible, with our car in second to last place, and an engine problem slowed us down shortly after the stop. We thought we would have to take the car back, but then we managed to make it work by changing some settings. Our power was very low, but at least we reached the finish line."

“When the rain hit the track we made the decision not to replace the tires and on balance it was the correct one. Today the maximum was done, but we hope to take advantage of what we learned this weekend in Hungary"he concluded.
