Formula 1 | Haas, Magnussen: “The Halo will be a problem”

After the last pre-season tests in Barcelona, the Halo question continues to take center stage. In an interview given to Autosport, Kevin Magnussen expressed his opinion on the new device, calling it "ugly and complex". According to the Dane, in fact, visibility will be a key issue next season as the tiara covers the entire upper view from the cockpit. At circuits like Spa and Austin, the Halo will be a big deal, especially in curves with a large difference in height, and Magnussen hopes that the issue will be further analyzed before arriving at a definitive solution.

Here are the words of Kevin Magnussen: "After the first tests I can say that I don't like the Halo. Aesthetically it is very ugly and makes getting in and out of the car complicated. It's incredibly inconvenient. Regarding visibility, the issue is very complex: in fact, when you move your gaze, it doesn't cause any discomfort since the view is completely free both to the left and the right. In changes of direction, however, the pylon causes some discomfort because you encounter it while moving the view."

“Two circuits where we could have problems related to the Halo could be Spa and Austin”, he added. “In these tracks there are corners with a significant change in inclination. I'll give you an example: you're following someone at Eau Rouge, curved with a big inclination, you won't be able to see if those in front of you will make a mistake at the top of the curve. Those following will not know if the one in front is against the wall or turned in the middle of the track, because your upward visibility is covered by the Halo".

Finally, a comment on the aeroscreen system: “Aesthetically it is superior, but this also has pros and cons. I would go back to the old way, removing the Halo and leaving everything as it was. These devices are to be avoided in our category."
