Formula 1 | Italian Grand Prix in Monza, the preview of the Scuderia Ferrari

Low aerodynamic load to exploit the straights, but be careful not to sacrifice too much traction

Formula 1 | Italian Grand Prix in Monza, the preview of the Scuderia Ferrari

The third race of the first and only seasonal triptych of the 1 Formula 2022 world championship takes place this weekend, the Italian Grand Prix at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza, which promises to be special for several reasons. First of all, the fans will be able to fill all the stands again, in fact last year the capacity of the circuit was severely limited by the rules linked to Covid-19, and the facility will be spruced up to celebrate the hundred years of life of the Autodromo Nazionale . The Italian one is unanimously known as one of the most legendary circuits in motorsport: built in 1922, it remained the only high-speed Formula 1 track after the renovation of Hockenheim. Its straights, once not interspersed with the current chicanes, were the scene of some of the closest duels in history, with overtaking on every lap, favored by the ease of catching the slipstream of the cars in front.

The current configuration offers an alternation of fast corners and long straights, with chicanes that slow down speed, subjecting drivers and cars to sudden braking. The most famous curve is the Parabolica, dedicated to Michele Alboreto since last year, a large and very fast hairpin that leads to the finish line, for which traction and efficiency of the single-seater are fundamental. The first variant is also challenging, since the cars must drop from 150 to 340 km/h in 80 metres.

Aerodynamic configuration. The cars will have low downforce to try to maximize speed on the straights. The set-up will be fundamental for turning fast and being able to overtake, but when setting up you will also need to pay attention not to sacrifice too much traction. There are two DRS zones: on the main straight and between the second Lesmo curve and the Ascari chicane; 53 laps to go, equal to 306,72 km.

Program. The one taking place on Sunday is the 92nd edition of the Grand Prix, the 73rd valid for the Formula 1 world championship (all held in Monza apart from the 1980 one, which took place in Imola). Over the years, Scuderia Ferrari has won 19 times, also obtaining 21 pole positions and 69 podiums. The cars will take to the track on Friday at 14pm local time for the first hour of free practice and at 17pm for the second. The last free practice session is scheduled for Saturday at 13pm in preparation for the qualifying at 16pm. The race will start on Sunday at 15pm.
