Formula 1 | GP Canada, bad luck and disappointment for Ferrari in Montreal

Scuderia Ferrari took second and third place in the fiftieth Canadian Grand Prix in Formula 1 history after Sebastian Vettel was given a five-second penalty which meant he slipped behind Lewis Hamilton despite the German crossing the finish line first. Sebastian was the author of a great race after yesterday's pole position, managing to keep the reigning world champion behind him for the entire race. Charles Leclerc brought home the second podium of his career by climbing onto the third step like in Bahrain.

Departure. At the start Sebastian was able to maintain first position over Hamilton, while Charles managed to come alongside the English driver in turn 1, but had to fall behind to avoid a probable collision. From the second lap a very close battle began between the German's Ferrari and the Briton's Mercedes which lasted until the checkered flag.

Pit stops. On lap 26 Sebastian returned for his pit stop, switching from the medium to the harder compound and returning to the track in third position. Two laps later it was Hamilton's turn who rejoined behind Charles and Sebastian, who at that point found himself in the lead. The team with him tried to lengthen the stint to try to take advantage of a possible Safety Car, often present in Montreal, which would have allowed him to recover the ten second gap he had accumulated, putting him back in a position to fight for the victory. On lap 33 Charles also stopped to switch from medium to hard tyres, finding himself behind Max Verstappen who, having started on the hard compound, had a different strategy. Leclerc needed a lap to get the new tires up to temperature and on lap 35 he regained third position.

Key moment. The decisive episode of the race occurred on lap 48 when Sebastian lost control of the rear of his SF90 at turn 3, returning to turn 4 after ending up on the grass but maintaining first position. The race officials, however, decided that with that maneuver Sebastian had left the track, taking advantage and leading Hamilton off the road, and gave him a five-second penalty to add to the race time. Sebastian crossed the finish line first ahead of Hamilton and Leclerc but the penalty reversed the order of the first two drivers on the podium.
