Formula 1 | Enzinger drops the bomb: “Porsche close to F1 in 2017”

In a chat given to the columns of Speed Week, Fritz Enzinger spoke about the possible entry of Porsche into Formula 1, underlining how the brand toyed with the idea of a similar commitment at the end of 2017.

During that season, in fact, the executive committee of the Volkswagen group commissioned the construction and development of a power unit, an aspect that would have led Porsche to make its entry in 2021.

It should be noted, however, that the idea ended up forgotten almost immediately, given that the brand preferred to bet on electric and Formula E (Porsche made its debut this season in the Circus managed by Alejandro Agag.ndr).

“Entering F1 was very close for us,” Enziger said. “When the Group Executive Committee commissioned a power unit in 2017, in fact, Porsche had not only already designed it, but also built it.”

“The 6-litre V1.6 engine was ready and running on the dyno, which led us to discuss regulatory requirements with the FIA and Liberty Media,” he continued. “However we preferred to bet on electric, putting the project aside”.
