Formula 1 | Ben Sulayem reassures: “No rift between FIA and FOM, relations have improved”

Formula 1 Ben Sulayem – FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has made it clear that the relationship between the FIA and Formula 1 Management (FOM) is much stronger than it used to be. There have been conflicts of varying degrees since he took office in 2021, but Ben Sulayem stressed that the situation has improved significantly this year, with a more stable and constructive collaboration. In an interview with motorsport.com, the president explained that there is now a greater understanding of the FIA's role on the part of the FOM. "There were misunderstandings in the past, but I honestly don't know what went wrong. In the last two and a half years, I can't see what I've done wrong."

Ben Sulayem then touched on an important topic, namely the need to provide the FIA with better resources. “If I want to get more for the FIA, how should I do it? Pay for it? I don’t take a single cent from the Federation, so I don’t see the problem in asking for better tools to improve the sport,” he explained, reiterating his vision for a more solid and structured future. In response to rumors of a possible “divorce” between the FIA and the FOM, he instead gave a dry and iron denial: “All this talk about divorce… please, can we be more mature? It’s not going to happen.”

It is worth noting that during the interview, the President recalled that, despite having entrusted the commercial rights of Formula 1 to the FOM, the FIA is still the owner of the sport, which allows it to have a say in the present and future, both financially and regulatoryly: “We own Formula 1. We have simply rented the rights, but there is a mutual respect that we both understand”. Finally, he expressed satisfaction with the collaboration that has been established with Greg Maffei and Stefano Domenicali, two key figures of the FOM. “We have improved our communication a lot and now we also organize joint strategic meetings, something we had never done before. This has certainly strengthened our relationship and improved the sport”.
