FIA: Use of DRS in free practice and qualifying will be limited in 2013

The FIA ​​will limit the use of the DRS only to the areas designated for use in the race, including during free practice and qualifying. The Federation said it was concerned about the use of the system throughout the circuit as the drivers would risk using the DRS already at the exit of the corners.

“We will prohibit the use of DRS during free practice and qualifying except in areas where it will actually be used in the race,” said technical delegate Charlie Whiting.

“It's something we told the teams the other day, we'll do it for safety reasons. There have been many accidents and pilots have told me that using DRS is becoming one of the causes. Some might argue that using the DRS in advance is not much different from I will press the accelerator all the way down but the DRS is an on-off switch, the accelerator can be dosed.”
