Ferrari and Haas will share the reserve driver

Haas, the new American F1 team, has no plans to sign an official reserve driver. With a French driver (Romain Grosjean) and a Mexican (Esteban Gutierrez), it was assumed that the Ferrari team would hire a third American driver.

But founder Gene Haas told Sportsbusiness Daily Global: “We don't have a backup driver right now. Probably the ideal would be to find a reserve driver in common with Ferrari."

According to Haas, the need for a backup pilot has decreased in recent years due to improved safety: “With the safety we have today, a backup pilot is usually only needed for an illness or other type of emergency. So it's not as important as you might think, usually we don't have a reserve even in NASCAR."
