Ferrari, Alonso: “The next three races are fundamental”
"There are two or three Grands Prix where we will have the chance to attack"
Maximize Ferrari's potential in the next three races. This seems to be the key to bringing home precious points that would lead Fernando Alonso to victory in the Formula 1 drivers' world championship.
The Spanish driver arrives in Singapore with a 37 point advantage over McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton, who has won the last three Grands Prix.
Alonso says the time has come for Ferrari to 'attack', given that of the seven remaining races, the Marina Bay, Suzuka and Yeongam circuits are the ones that would best suit the F2012. The two-time world champion also added that taking a few points in these GPs would make the championship finale very interesting and important.
"There are two or three Grands Prix where we will have the chance to attack." Alonso said in an interview in Singapore.
“I am confident in the car's performance, we can be competitive. If we are, we must take advantage of every opportunity.”
"In the next three races our goal is to win them to increase our advantage. There are seventy-five points on the table, we need to make the most of them.”
The Ferrari driver admitted that his car is in excellent condition and will be fast enough to fight for pole and victory.
"I think so", he declared when asked if it will be possible to fight for pole in Singapore. “We have to wait and watch the performances in tomorrow's free practice, but our objective remains pole position and victory.”
"We were competitive in Monaco and Canada, which is a kind of street circuit, so we will try to do our best. We know how crucial pole position is, so Saturday will be a very important day.”
Despite McLaren having won the last three races, Alonso confesses he does not feel under pressure and claims he is the only title contender who can afford to make mistakes.
"Not at all. If I had finished the race in Spa, my lead would have increased.”
"Now we need to recover in the next two or three races; It's true that McLaren is in excellent form and is the favourite, but it's up to us to improve the pace.”
"I'm not under pressure. There are five or six contenders for the title. It will be tough until the last race, but I'm probably the only one who can afford to make mistakes, the others can't, so I think the pressure is greater."he concluded.
