Daruvala wins in Bahrain, Ilott out of the points

F2 | Mick Schumacher is the 2020 champion

Mick Schumacher won the 2020 Formula 2 title. The German PREMA driver, son of the seven-time world champion legend, suffered throughout the Sprint Race in Bahrain, but the subdued performance of Ilott, his only contender after the Feature Race yesterday, which saw him finish outside the points, was enough to deliver the 2020 title to the talent of the Ferrari Driver Academy.

Very frenetic race in the opening stages: Schumacher and Ilott, both starting from the second row, battled for the entire first half of the race, with the German, however, in serious difficulty given the continuous blocking of the front right, which forced him to return in the pits while he was first in third position, and then sucked in by the chasing group. At that point, with the German out of the running, Ilott would have needed second place, but a good 5 seconds away, given that the leading pair of Ticktum and Daruvala, the latter later winning the race, took advantage of the chaos in their shoulders to escape and do an almost solo race, until the last lap at least, when Tsunoda passed the Briton for an all-Carlin one-two.

That said, Ilott was unable to quicken his pace, his tires were also very much at the limit, and he was overtaken by virtually all of his pursuers, finishing outside the top 8 and therefore outside the points. For Schumacher, a few laps of waiting before the checkered flag, which crowned him the 2020 Formula 2 champion, in his second season. For him, a move to Formula 1 accompanied by a pretty good CV, with today's title as the icing on the cake.
