F1 | Wolff confident: “Hamilton could have won in Brazil”
"With the strategy adopted we could only have taken fourth place. But Lewis was the fastest and we could have won. Vettel, however, managed the whole race"
Started from pit lane for missing the qualifications and having made modifications to his car, including replacing the engine on his Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton he managed to close the Brazilian Grand Prix in fourth position, certainly also helped by the race dynamics, the strength of the new PU and the speed of the single-seater. Toto wolff he even believes that his driver could have even won the race, with his amazing driving.
What surprised everyone, apart from his comeback and the result which saw him just off the podium, was the time difference with Sebastian Vettel. The Englishman, in fact, reached the checkered flag just over 5 seconds behind the race leader. “Yes, I think a victory would have been possible. He was the fastest out there, but you have to remember that Sebastian managed the race pace at all times apart from the final laps,” the team boss commented to Motorsport.com
Wolff further explained that the strategy designed by Mercedes for Hamilton was aiming for fourth place: “When we discussed in the morning, we thought that, with a safety car, the best result would have been P4. The SC helped us a little, but the gap with the Ferraris was so small that it couldn't have done more. For me it was the best fourth place I've ever seen,” he said. “When you consider that he started from the pitlane and finished just 5,4 seconds behind the leader, it's an astonishing step,” he concluded.
