F1 | Wolff on the future: “I like the role of team principal, but sooner or later I will hand over the baton”

A few days after his confirmation in the role of team principal at Mercedes, Toto Wolff returned to talk about the work he awaits over the next two seasons, underlining how one of the priorities is to look for a replacement who can take the reins of the Formula team 1.

According to the Austrian, all the investors agree on the fact that the future of the team must be planned, an aspect which will obviously push the Austrian manager to look for a profile who can take his place, perhaps as early as 2022, the year in which the new rules will come into force sports regulation strongly supported by Liberty Media and FIA.

“2020, at least from my point of view, was a very important year,” Toto Wolff declared to Autosprint. “The first half, i.e. the one without races, allowed me to reflect carefully on the future. I never thought about leaving and leaving this "family", but I have always said that as team principal there is a certain deadline."

“If I felt someone could do a better job than me, I would definitely have handed over the baton, but that wasn't the case,” continued the Austrian. “It's not just about the sporting aspect, but also the political and commercial one. Together with the other shareholders we have therefore chosen to continue with this structure. For me it's not a problem, I like this role."

On the future he added: “I need to look at the next seasons. Someone, one day, will take my place, while I dedicate myself to a national role such as CEO or Executive President. When this will happen not. I know, but everyone on the Board of Directors agrees that sooner or later a decision of this type will have to be made."
