F1 | Williams: “It's essential for us to get back to racing”
"We don't have the support that most of our opponents have"
According to the team principal of the British team, it is essential to start the 2020 season for the survival of some independent teams. The racing calendar has been decimated, the first nine events have been canceled or postponed to a later date. All this has left F1 and its 10 teams in a vulnerable position due to the loss of revenue and financial uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 outbreak, with growing concern that the sport could give up four teams.
“Formula 1 is in an incredibly difficult environment right now -said Claire Williams to Sky Sports News- quThis is why we had so many meetings with the other team principals. We have done everything necessary to ensure we get through this period unscathed. In much of these discussions we've talked about when we can get back to racing, especially for a team like ours, one of the few true independents left. We don't have the support that most of our opponents havei. For us to return to racing is actually essential this year, but as I said, only when it is safe to do so."
In a virtual meeting held last Thursday between the team principals, F1 and the FIA, a plan was drawn up with the aim of starting the season on 5 July with the Austrian Grand Prix behind closed doors, followed by more races at Silverstone.
