F1 | Whiting: “The Renault's exhaust is regular”
"We must accept that the effect of exhaust gases on wings exists and has always existed"
F1's governing body will not ask a Renault to change the layout of its exhaust this season.
During testing in Barcelona, attention shifted to the French car's exhaust which appeared to have been angled towards a particularly heat-resistant rear wing. In fact, blowing the exhaust is not permitted but the race director, Charlie whiting, interviewed by autosprint, clarified any doubts:
“The advantage they get is absolutely marginal. I don't see any problem, as long as you don't start the engine in a way that wouldn't be normal.".
He refers to any special exhaust engine map, but reiterated that, other than that, what Renault is doing is not against the regulations.
“We have to accept that the effect of exhaust gases on wings exists and always has existed. In 2012 and 2013, the impact was huge, so one of the things we did in 2014 was to ensure that any effects from exhaust gases were reduced. We will find out during the year whether it is necessary to intervene again".
