In a chat given to the columns of the GPUpdate site, Max Verstappen he recounted the most embarrassing moment he has experienced since racing in Formula 1, underlining how Austin 2016 occupies a special place in the "chat" ranking.

During that race, subsequently won by Lewis Hamilton, the Dutchman returned to the pits without the garage's authorization, which created a lot of confusion among the mechanics. A chaotic situation that led him to lose several seconds from the podium area (the Red Bull standard bearer was stationed in fifth position).

“The most embarrassing moment? In 2016, in Austin”, said Max Verstappen. “I was driving and I was fifth, more or less. I was doing pretty well. I was getting close to third and fourth position. My engineer said, 'Push. Push now.' I thought it meant that the stop was near and that I had to speed up."

“So at the end of the lap I went to the pits and I immediately realized that that hadn't been a call,” continued the Dutchman from Red Bull. “I never said it, but then I thought, 'my God, what have I done? So I tried to warn them: 'guys are in the pits!'.

“Suddenly I see all the mechanics running and picking up tires at random,” he added. “The stop was eight or nine seconds and considering what I had done it was very quick. After the stop I didn't say anything because there was no reason to argue."

“So I continued, but three laps later my car broke down and I retired. After the race I remember that Helmut was very angry with me,” he concluded.
