F1 | Speed and talent at the service of Toro Rosso: here is Pierre Gasly's identity card

Pierre Gasly has been knocking on Formula 1's door ever since he won GP2 in 2016, when he took the title at the final round in Abu Dhabi. In reality, we could say that he started doing it as early as 2 years old, when he went to watch his older brothers race karts.

Petrol flows in the veins of this talented twenty-one year old: his grandfather already raced karts and his father also competed in various motorsport categories. The Frenchman hails from the city of Rouen, famous for the circuit on which the French Grand Prix was once held. Like all his peers, Gasly began racing karts, a category in which he competed from 2006 to 2010. He climbed aboard a single-seater for the first time in 2011 when he took part in the hotly contested French F4 Championship: he finished in third place. The following year he moved to the 2-litre Formula Renault, finishing the season in third place, before winning the title in 2013.

It was precisely in this period that his speed and determination were noticed by Red Bull talent scouts and so he entered the Junior Programme, then arriving at Formula Renault 3.5 in 2014. He finished in second place, behind another well-known Red Bull driver. Bull Junior Team, a certain Carlos Sainz. That year he made his debut in GP2, the preparatory championship for Formula 1, and then faced the entire 2015 season, with ups and downs.

Last year, however, with the Prema Power team, everything went right for the young Frenchman, and he managed to take home the title at the end of an exciting season.

Since 2015, in addition to his competitive activity on the track, Gasly has also held the role of Red Bull Racing reserve driver. Given the lack of seats available in Formula 1, at the end of 2016 he was offered the opportunity to enrich his experience by competing in the competitive Japanese Super Formula Championship. Before making his Formula 1 debut at the 2017 Malaysian GP, Pierre had already done very well in Japan, achieving some victories in his first season in the land of the Rising Sun. Pierre already knew the team well, having conducted tests with Toro Rosso in Barcelona in 2015 and 2016.
