F1 | Turrini clarifies: "No one in Ferrari offered Vettel the role of second driver"

Sebastian Vettel continues to be the most talked about driver of this period. In this period of time, also thanks to the forced stop of on-track activities due to the Covid-19 pandemic, rumors continue to arise regarding the German's future regarding his possible renewal with Ferrari.

Leo Turrini wanted to clarify the German, whose contract expires with the Cavallino team at the end of 2020. In fact, on his blog Profondo Rosso, the Emilian journalist underlined that within a month there should be a solution to this market enigma, but none of Ferrari's top management has offered the four-time world champion a renewal as second driver.

"In the space of a month, presumably before the engines restart in Austria as Liberty Media and FIA dream, Ferrari and Vettel will decide whether there is a common future – reports Turrini -. Ferrari offered Seb a contract extension. Obviously it never occurred to Camilleri and Binotto to propose the role of second driver to the German. Really, it takes a lot of imagination to imagine that Camilleri and Binotto go to a four-time world champion and tell him: come on, dude, stay here and act as Carletto's wingman, who is a phenomenon but has won two races so far. But come on, a little seriousness".

But if the white smoke between Ferrari and Vettel does not arrive, Turrini believes that the German's replacement could be Carlos Sainz and not Daniel Ricciardo. The Spaniard, currently working for McLaren, would in fact be the right profile to pair with Leclerc.

"If the agreement is not found (and I don't rule it out), I quietly doubt that Ricciardo would be interested. Maybe I'm wrong and by the way I really like Australian. Only, I don't see him next to Leclerc. For a whole series of reasons, the most credible candidate for the eventual election after Vettel is the Spaniard Sainz, as has been said several times in recent months.".
