Points objective for the Scuderia di Faenza

F1 | Toro Rosso, Gasly and Hartley ready for the next Singapore Grand Prix

After the heavy failure in Monza, Pierre Gasly and Brendon Hartley are ready to face the next Singapore Grand Prix, the fifteenth round of this 2018 Formula 1 world championship. The characteristics of the STR13, at least on paper, should be well suited to the circuit Marina Bay, which is why the objective of the two drivers will be to gain important points from a constructors' point of view.

Here is Pierre Gasly: “My only experience in Singapore was as the third driver for Red Bull Racing. It was an opportunity to see the race live and I was able to understand how hot it is and what it means to race at night, get up in the afternoon and go to bed in the early hours of the morning: all in all it's simple, you continue to follow the time zone European and you just have to get used to driving with artificial light. It's a different pace, but I liked it."

“This humid heat makes the Singapore race the most physically demanding of the year. Even though I've never ridden there, just looking at the layout I can say that it's a circuit that I like, with lots of corners, very technical indeed. We knew that the last two races would be complicated but, at least on paper, Singapore should adapt a little better to the characteristics of our car. I can't wait to see how we go. To cope with the heat I trained wearing a lot of clothes and sweated a lot. I will follow this type of training until the weekend, as well as spend some time in the sauna. Marina Bay is one of my favorite tracks in video games, so I can't wait to race there live.", he added.

Here are Brendon Hartley's impressions: “For me, Singapore will be a new track. All the riders I spoke to told me that it is the physically hardest one on the calendar, because it is a demanding track and above all because it is hot and humid. Of course, I have taken part in many races at night throughout my career, like Le Mans for example, but with artificial light you won't notice much difference compared to daytime, unless it rains."

“Historically, Toro Rosso has done well here. We knew that the last few races would have been difficult, but as a team we all believe that Singapore represents a good opportunity to get a good result.", he continued. “Last week I tested this track on the simulator which, as usual, gives advantages to both the driver and the team. The track was carefully mapped in 3D, so it was an opportunity to get to know every bump and curb. This allows me to get all my reference points and be ready when Friday practice starts. The simulator allows the team to make many adjustments to the set-up even before arriving on the track and see if the driver benefits from it in terms of feeling."

“It's not exactly 100% the same as actual driving, because it's not as hot and you don't have the same physical demands, but it's a perfect way to get some visual reference points and get an idea of where you're going. Other than that, I trained myself to resist the heat by wearing different clothes. I feel in excellent shape and this could be an advantage for Sunday evening: I can't wait for the weekend to arrive"he concluded.
