F1 Test | Pirelli, Mario Isola: “The 2020 tires are the best solution for next year”

With the two days of testing in Abu Dhabi, Pirelli brought the five compounds planned for 2020 to the Yas Marina circuit. The Italian manufacturer gave all the teams the opportunity to compare next year's tires with those used in this season, so as to have a clearer impression of the work of the world championship to come. If the teams so wish, Pirelli will also supply the 2019 tires from Melbourne onwards, but there will have to be the consent of at least seven out of ten teams.

“These last two days of collective testing with the 2020 tires took place with temperatures similar to those of the season – confirmed Mario Isola, F1 and Car Racing manager of the Milanese manufacturer. For Pirelli it was essential to give the teams the opportunity to carry out comparative tests between 2019 and 2020 tyres. Although each team's program was individual as always, the drivers were able to collect their subjective impressions which they will be able to compare with the objective data of the engineers. During the first day we mainly saw shorter runs, while today the work focused on race pace. We have noticed some improvements, especially on the C5, which have not always happened for the other compounds in the range. To get a more complete picture, in the next few days we will analyze all the data in detail, especially on the long run simulations, which are particularly representative on this track. Given the evolution of the single-seaters expected for next season, we believe that the construction of the 2020 tires is the best solution, but we are available to continue using those from the current range should the teams vote in favour."
