F1 | Szafnauer: “Stroll's goal is to make Aston Martin a top team”

Starting next season, Racing Point will change its identity once again, becoming Aston Martin. This is due to the acquisition by Lawrence Stroll, former owner of the Silverstone-based team, of some shares in the well-known English car brand, completed a few weeks ago.

As part of this agreement there was also the desire to begin a journey that could bring the Aston Martin name back to Formula 1 and, of course, the opportunity to combine these two worlds came thanks to Stroll. So starting from the 2021 season, Racing Point will change its name again, as Otmar Szafnauer, team principal of the British team, says: “It is important news for Aston Martin and also for Formula 1. As one of the most iconic sports car brands in the world, Aston Martin needed to be present on the Formula 1 grid and this solution gives the possibility of having an Aston Martin F1 Team from 2021 onwards. It is news that is sure to have an impact on all fans around the world and will give even greater prominence to a brand that is already recognized as one of the most important British sports car brands.”

At the same time, there will also be new objectives for the future. The idea is to make the team, thanks also to the investments of the new owner, one of the most competitive on the grid, bringing the Aston Martin name to compete for world titles against high-ranking rivals such as Mercedes and Ferrari: “Lawrence Stroll spoke with entire staff last week and established that the goal is for Aston Martin to become one of the top teams in the sport. Everyone is happy to represent such a legendary brand,” added Szafnauer.
