F1 | Stuck: “Fans want to see a real sport with real overtaking”
The former German driver is critical of the aerodynamic aspects of the new Formula 1 cars
The new regulations brought more speed but not everyone liked some of the choices. Among these also the former German pilot Hans Joachim Stuck who, in a recent interview, spoke about the aerodynamic problems of the new single-seaters.
“It's not just a question of costs – he told the German magazine Sponsor – aerodynamics make races boring. Fans want to see real sport with real overtaking, not some meaningless technical innovation like the folding wing.”
The clearest reference is to DRS, the controversial mobile wing currently under consideration by the new owners of F1 for possible elimination. Everything will be decided after checking the show during 2017. More and more professionals are convinced that overtaking will be even more difficult than in previous years.
The greater speed of the single-seaters may not produce the desired results: “This idea was proposed by Ecclestone and approved by the strategy group – said the Williams technical chief Pat symonds – the idea was to make the cars much more difficult for 17-year-old rookies, but the facts show that young people are perfectly capable of dealing with the new cars.”
