F1 | Steiner admits: “I spoke to Hulkenberg”

Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean will leave the Haas team at the end of the season but the American team has not yet announced the line-up for 2021. The team principal, Gunther Steiner, admitted that their priority is to sign young talents and at the currently the drivers on the list are Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin.

“Yes, we want young drivers for next year -he commented to Sport1- we also want to keep the same drivers in 2022, so it is important to lay the foundations with our new drivers next year. Formula 2 is very competitive this year and logically our collaboration with Ferrari could lead to a collaboration with one of these juniors. Mick Schumacher will probably finish first or second in the championship and Robert Shwartzman is currently fourth or fifth, so these guys are doing very well and both are certainly an option for next year."

Another possible candidate for a seat at Haas is Nico Hulkenberg. Steiner himself admitted having had contact with the German:

“Obviously I talked to Nico. We know exactly what he can do but I no longer need to talk to him about what he wants. We know exactly that."
