F1 | Russell on the new Williams: “The 2020 car will be an evolution”
"We committed to a strategy in 2018 and it took us some time to rebuild the foundations of the car," said the Englishman.
Intercepted by Auto Motor Und Sport, George Russell spoke about the development that Williams will follow over the next few weeks, underlining how the growth of the other teams will almost certainly force the English team into another season of difficulty. Despite the technical evolution and the work carried out by the technicians during the winter break, in fact, Russell does not expect to fight for the top ten in 2020, given that the gap suffered in 2019 proved to be too large to be closed in a few weeks .
“We had to look at the basic structure of the machine, as there were aspects that were fundamentally wrong,” said George Russell. “Something was wrong with the aerodynamics. The load was not constant and this led the pilots to make mistakes. Lance and Sergey often ended up out without even knowing how. The staff had to start from scratch, but we've been on a good path since then."
“We committed to a strategy in 2018 and it took time to rebuild the foundations of the car,” he continued. “We have not seen any progress in the tunnel for some time, but now the trend has changed. We will definitely be better in 2020."
On the objectives he instead concluded: “We will fight a few times with the others, but realistically it will be another difficult season for us. McLaren has taken a big step and if others don't follow that path, then we will be fighting for a very strong position. If everyone improves by a second, however, we will remain at the bottom."
