Latifi: "Zandvoort circuit extremely complex for overtaking"

Williams, difficult day in Zandvoort
F1 | Russell raises the "white flag" in Holland for a gearbox problem

It ended with a retirement on Sunday for George Russell at Zandvoort, the scene of Formula 1's last Dutch Grand Prix.

Despite taking 11th place in qualifying, the Englishman from Williams was unable to keep up with the pace of the drivers inside the top ten, an aspect which led him to battle for positions between 12th and 15th square. Subsequently, a gearbox problem forced the team to withdraw the car.

Difficult day also for Nicholas Latifi, fighting with the Haas and never really close to occupying the positions within the top 10.

“The first stint of the race was good and in general we managed to keep Antonio Giovinazzi and the two McLarens behind us,” said Williams' Englishman. “Unfortunately, when I returned to the pits, I pushed too much and did not respect the speed limit in the pit lane. Here the entrance is quite complicated and I probably exaggerated. In any case, even without the five second penalty, the result would have been no different than a 12th or 13th position. In the end we had to withdraw the car due to a gearbox problem."

On Monza he instead declared: “I can't wait to fly to Italy to take on a Grand Prix that promises to be totally different. Zandvoort is a maximum load track, while in Monza you go with little wing. The format will be a sprint race and I am sure that this will offer us possibilities over the weekend."

Here are Nicholas Latifi's assessments: “As we expected, Zandvoort proved to be quite a difficult circuit and the layout didn't allow us to make many overtakings. Starting from the pit lane made everything more complicated as it took Sergio and I almost two laps to catch up with the group. The first stint of the race didn't go too badly, so much so that I managed to overtake both Haas cars. However, the long stint on the hard tires proved to be more complicated, also in terms of management. Today was a struggle."
