F1 | RP, Szafnauer on Alonso's test: "40 years old, he's not young, so we'll ride with Vettel..."
The Racing Point team principal said he was surprised by the authorization given to Fernando Alonso
In the usual press conference on Friday, Otman Szafanauer, Racing Point team principal, underlined that he was surprised by the exemption granted by the FIA to Renault to allow Fernando Alonso to run in the tests for young drivers in Abu Dhabi and that if there was an opportunity his team would evaluate the possibility of participating in the test using the next starter Sebastian Vettel. The German, about to leave Maranello to settle in Silverstone (under the guise of Aston Martin) would thus have a first opportunity to become familiar with the new team. Szafnauer made it clear that he will evaluate what to do by consulting the FIA.
“I have to understand well how these rules work - Szafnauer said - I was surprised by the authorization granted to Fernando, I want to speak to the FIA. The rules should be quite clear, it's a test for young drivers, Alonso is a two-time world champion of almost forty years old. He is not a young driver. Let's try to understand and then we will also decide what to do, if we were allowed we wouldn't mind letting Sebastian Vettel spin, but there are still too many ifs..."
