F1, Renault surprised by the new engine
Despite some problems in testing, the French manufacturer is optimistic for 2017
La Renault is confident of being able to reduce the gap from its strongest rivals even if, during the last tests in Barcelona, there were some difficulties and the team opted for a more conservative engine mapping. At the moment however, the main objective is to get both cars to the finish line in the grand prix Melbourne.
The Managing Director of the French team, Cyril Abiteboul, has high hopes of seeing progress for the 2017 World Championship, which will start in two weeks in Australia. Even if there have been some serious problems with the new power unit, there is a small glimmer of hope.
Regarding the times recorded in the tests, with an improvement of around 3 thousandths compared to the 2016 engine, the French manager said that this achievement was unexpected and that it bodes well for the future. “We are there, and this will be a great challenge”, Abiteboul said a Motorsport.com. “We knew we would encounter difficulties which then materialised”.
"So", he concluded, “this means that we are not working in vain, the performances are there when we put the single-seaters on the track”.
