F1 | Renault, Fernando Alonso: “I would like to get on the podium, perhaps with Carlos Sainz”

Fernando Alonso's return to F1, with "his" Renault (which from 2021 will be called Alpine), is one of the most interesting topics of the 2021 season. After a two-year absence Alonso returns with enthusiasm and renewed ambitions, not hiding his his confidence in the Renault project, with the Anglo-French team based in Enstone wanting to take advantage of the regulatory revolution of 2022 to return to fighting for the top positions.

In the meantime, however, there is a whole 2021 to face, certainly a transition year, but Renault has already demonstrated a good state of form and a certain competitiveness in 2020 as demonstrated by the three podiums achieved (two with Ricciardo and one with Ocon) and from the ability to stay in the fight for third place in the Constructors' Championship until the end.

Fernando, for his part, is aware of the hierarchies on the track, and does not set himself any objective for the coming season, other than that of integrating as best as possible with the team in view of 2022. The driver from Oviedo, however, does not give up dreaming of getting on the podium, perhaps with his student and new Ferrari driver Sainz.

“I don't have specific goals for 2021. I'm not aiming for a certain position - Alonso's words to the radio station Cadena Ser - Obviously it would be very nice to get on the podium and it would be a dream to get there together with Sainz, but we know well that next season will still be dominated by Mercedes. 2021 is a year of transition, I will be busy integrating with the team, but the following year with the change in regulations we want to be ready to win and be in the top positions again."
