In a chat given to the Marca newspaper, Sergio Perez spoke about the regulatory change expected for the 2021 season, underlining how this move will do nothing but increase the gap that exists between the top teams, namely Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes, and the teams medium and low ranking. According to the Mexican, in fact, a regulation change allows the top teams to generate a great advantage in terms of development, given that with their budgets they are able to make the car progress at a greater speed.

The lower-ranking teams, on the other hand, take years to reach top performance, a factor which obviously does nothing but break up the group, opening gaps between the top of the standings and the teams fighting for fourth place in the constructors' championship. A complex situation that will not be resolved before 2024, given that the budget cap will only come into force from 2021 (the top teams will be able to develop the new aerodynamic concept with much higher economic potential than the other teams. Ed.).

“The 2014 regulatory change opened one of the most important gaps in the history of Formula 1,” said Sergio Perez to the Spanish press. “Two years ago it was decided to expand the wheels and cars, which gave the top teams a further advantage. The advantage of the big teams increases every time there is a regulation change, since they can spend more money on the development of new concepts."

“Small teams take years to get closer and more often than not this happens when the top teams run out of room for improvement,” concluded the Mexican from Racing Point. “We need stability to achieve a compact deployment.”
