F1 | 2021 regulations, there will not be a single supplier for the gearbox control unit

La FIA decided not to proceed standardization of the gearbox control unit in view of the new technical regulation which will come into force in Formula One starting from 2021.

The Federation has therefore decided to take this path, thus backtracking compared to previous months. The decision taken therefore concerned both the technical and financial aspects, after having discussed it with both the team and potential suppliers.

"Due to the complexity of the components, gearboxes remain a sensitive issue in terms of reliability, and this has been taken into account in the assessments of the FIA's technical department”, we read in the press release issued by the Federation.

The note also underlines that to contain purchase costs, other solutions will be found that go beyond the sole supplier of gearboxes.

The new regulatory rules will be made official by the end of June.
