F1 | Red Bull, Sergio Perez: “The goal is the front row”

Home idol Sergio Perez's weekend gets off to an uphill start: the Mexican, due to the track being too dirty - and not because of emotion - loses control of the rear of his RB16B, thus damaging the wing. Despite this, the Mexican is satisfied with his performance on Friday, where he usually struggles to find the right feeling with the car. The atmosphere of home, and the passionate cheering, are certainly good for Checo's mood, who has only one goal in mind: the front row. Of course, pole seems a little unattainable, with Max Verstappen determined to take everything in Mexico too, and his times prove it, but Perez's role will be fundamental for Red Bull: Hamilton is just twelve points behind and Mercedes instead he seems to struggle among the curves of Hermanos Rodriguez.

"I think we didn't lose much data today, despite the accident in FP1. It was a shame to have damaged the car, the guys had some extra work to do in the pits, but other than that it was a positive day. I was more comfortable on the long runs than the single lap, so I think there is still potential to improve the car – explained Checo – I still have one session to work on it and the goal for me is to be on the front row tomorrow. The gaps from the Mercedes will be very minimal in qualifying, but we hope to put both cars in front. I don't think this day was representative for qualifying, tomorrow we will all be closer, it will be interesting to understand how we will line up on the grid. The fans have been incredible, it's great to see their support at every corner, everyone is very enthusiastic and cheering for me. Every time I stop the car I hear them screaming, and it's only Friday!".
